The new 1730 Wine Bar and Eats in Mount Vernon, open since September 15, is more than just a place to sip wine. On the one hand, it offers a diverse and eclectic menu thanks to chef Myra Session who worked with celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson at Red Rooster Harlem.
And second, it has the feel of a garden party thanks to the expansive flower-bedecked courtyard (with room for 43 guests) designed by owner Dawn Longmore.

Longmore, who runs 1730 with her husband Ian and daughter Mikhala, comes from a large family – she has nine siblings, which makes for large family reunions. Getting out and enjoying each other’s company is in her DNA, and it is this family feeling that she wanted to bring to her new space. “I like people,” she said. “I also love the food and the wine.”
The fact that she had been in the horticultural business for over 10 years and once owned a florist shop also played a part in the decor, as did the desire to inject into it. a touch of cheerfulness. Thus, the space is decorated with a variety of signs that read “Why limit Happy to one hour?” “Tonight’s forecast: 99% chance of wine” and “This wine makes me great.” There’s also a photo booth inside where you can email or text photos, including boomerangs.
Longmore, who is originally from Jamaica but now lives in the neighborhood, wanted to create a space that pays homage to the diversity of Mount Vernon.
“In my neighborhood alone, we have Portuguese, Italians, Brazilians and the Caribbean,” she said. “I want to hit every region so that we have wines from all of these places.”
The wine list is “a work in progress,” she said, and something they will adjust based on the needs of the community. This extends to the food, as well as where Session strives to reflect the demographics of the neighborhood, as well as Longmore’s background.
“This is her baby so I want to create dishes that are meaningful to her,” Session said. Example: the aptly named Dawn’s 1730 burger, a quarter pound of beef with lettuce, tomato, pickles, bacon, cheddar cheese and jerk aioli topped with a sunny egg and served on a hard crust, a type of bun you would like to find in the Caribbean.
In another nod to fusion, the white wine pasta – traditionally an Italian dish – is served with peppers and onions and topped with jerk chicken. Diners will also find plenty of appetizers, including pineapple salsa with plantain dips, garlic and parmesan fries, meatballs in white wine or jerk sauce. , cold cuts and cheese boards, three kinds of wings (Habanero pineapple, parmesan and bare garlic) and four kinds of flat breads.
And since wine goes just as well with cheese as it does with dessert, the menu also includes a lot of chocolate, including a piece of chocolate cake, a chocolate red wine cupcake served with a reduction of red wine, an amaretto cupcake with Toasted almonds and amaretto in cream sauce and a red velvet cupcake with raspberry compote, all of which are baked by Longmore’s sister, Debbie Vally, who owns the online bakery, Cami Cakes Bakeshoppe.
As for the name, Longmore’s sister, Janice Wilson, is in the military and tends to speak in military time. “She once said she had to do something at 5 pm and it stuck with me,” Longmore said. “Mainly because everyone always says it’s 5pm somewhere.”
She added the “30” (because that sounded better) so although 5:30 pm is technically 5:30 pm, you can still come and drink here earlier: The wine bar opens at 4 pm
And, starting September 26, the restaurant will be open for brunch with pastries and croissants from Fleetwood Bakery in Mount Vernon.
