After consulting with stakeholders, the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) is updating the rules for alcohol service establishments (e.g. bars, nightclubs) that wish to change their business model and reopen serving meals from external sources.
During the pandemic, this has been an option for these premises. With the recent restrictions, more interest was expressed and clarifications were sought.
This order specifies that “full meal and service” means offering a wide variety of foods, which may include appetizers, main courses and desserts, but not only appetizers, tapas, desserts or snacks.
Following the order, these places must:
- enter into an agreement with one or more catering partners to provide full meal service, and maintain a copy of all catering partner agreements on premises and provide agreements to a vicarious agent upon request;
- provide full meal service, provide full menus, take meal orders, serve meals and receive payment;
- keep a record of the sale of meals and make it available to law enforcement officers upon request; and
- cease full meal service no more than three hours before the end of liquor service.
Changes will be reflected in PHO’s Food and Liquor Service Establishments Ordinance.
