Brejoeira Palace is an early 19th century Portuguese castle and an official national monument that has belonged to several aristocrats over the years.
The 30 hectares of the property are home to 18 hectares of vines and an Alvarinho winery. Alvarinho is the Portuguese name for the Albariño grape more commonly associated with Spanish wine and is cultivated in northern Portugal, near the Spanish border.
The palace was built for the royal knight Luis Pereira Velho de Moscoso and designed by architect Carlos Amarante. It was considerably enlarged by its second owner, a very wealthy businessman from Porto, Pedro María Fonseca de Araujo, who commissioned the famous architect Ventura Terra. It was around this time that the palace was endowed with a throne, a winter garden, a theater, a chapel and a large central staircase with paneling of traditional Portuguese blue tiles by Jorge Pinto.
The Alvarinho vineyards were planted in the mid-20th century by the palace’s third inhabitant, Maria Hermínia Silva d’Oliveira Paes, to whom her father, Com. Francisco de Oliveira Paes. She added the cellar in the mid-1970s.
The 32,290-square-foot palace has 20 rooms on each floor, many of which are currently undefined in their function. According to Ms. Mancebo, there is room for at least 12 or 13 bedrooms, and at least 10 bathrooms, with plenty of reception areas. The palace covers 30 hectares of land, including 18 hectares dedicated to vines.

The main feature of this property is the winery, which produces 75,000 bottles of Alvarinho wine per year, as well as a spirit called aguardente. Although the historic winery is operational, it has not received as much investment as the palace itself and is ready for renovation, according to Ms Mancebo.
The rest of the 30 hectares of the property are wooded, with the exception of the buildings and gardens, including a lake with an island, fountains and man-made caves. In addition to the palace itself, which includes several reception rooms, a library and a winter garden, the buildings on the property include a chapel, stables, cellars, a gym, accommodation for the staff and the staff. distillery with courtroom.
About a third of the palace is now used as a private residence for the owners, the rest is currently used as a museum. According to Ms. Mancebo, the property being classified as a historical monument, its museum function allows it to benefit from non-taxable contributions for its restoration.

The palace sits just below Portugal’s northernmost border, in the charming medieval town of Monção, a municipality in the district of Viana do Castelo. The palace is 130 kilometers from the city of Porto and, right on the border with Spain, only 30 kilometers from the Spanish city of Vigo, which has an airport.
