Wine of the week: Which wine to choose for the Labor Day weekend?

The daylight may be receding, but we still have plenty of hot weather for grilling in the backyard and cooling down inside. Here are some wines to welcome the Labor Day long weekend and say goodbye to summer.

Summer is coming to an end and re-entering what was traditionally considered (at least before the pandemic) to be the first regular work week requires a gentle approach. A smooth return to work and school demands the perfect Labor Day wine.

Here are some wines to welcome the Labor Day long weekend and say goodbye to summer.

I like rosé wines at any time of the year, but summer seems to suit them perfectly. Pale rosé is offered by the producer of the iconic Provence Rosé, Whispering Angel. It’s chic, stylish and a bit irreverent.

The whimsical label, which evokes New York’s glamorous cocktail scenes from the early to mid-20th century, as well as cafes in London and Paris, was inspired by early illustrations from The New Yorker magazine.

The wine offers a lot of strawberry and citrus aromas. The matching flavor profile sits on a lightly textured, medium bodied frame, perfect for a hot summer day. The high acidity and delicious minerality keep the wine refreshing and bright, making it a perfect pairing with seafood and roast chicken.

I would drink it alone too. Refrigerate before serving. $ 17

If your Labor Day efforts require nothing more than a hammock and an ice bucket, then the 2018 Laetare Pinot Grigio from Friuli, Italy, is perfect for relaxing. The lovely straw colored wine has a lovely floral nose that includes scents of nectarines and apple blossoms.

Crunchy flavors of apple, passion fruit and citrus in honey make this a wine to pair with either barbecue chicken or nothing at all. $ 15

And speaking of relaxation, many people don’t realize that putting a little chill on some red wines is a wonderfully refreshing alternative for red wine lovers, like the 2019 Drouhin Beaujolais Village of AOC Beaujolais Village, just south of the famous Burgundy region in France.

Made exclusively from Gamay grape varieties; fresh aromas of black fruits, red cherries and sweet spices permeating the nose are repeated on the palate where baking spices and tea combine with silky tannins on the fresh finish.

It goes well with many different foods, such as salmon, chicken, and grilled meats. Refrigerate about 20 minutes before serving. $ 19

If you’re grilling steaks, burgers, or ribs and you’re in the mood to splurge, then you’re definitely going to want a great red wine. I suggest it 2016 Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve of the Alexander Valley in Sonoma, California.

It’s a full-bodied, richly textured wine that offers a remarkably rewarding bouquet of blackberries, blueberries and cherries. On the palate, intense flavors of cassis, cherries, black plums and black licorice liqueur invade the front of the tongue, and a touch of mocha slips into the powerful and slender finish.

It’s the perfect accompaniment to a hamburger or steak. $ 45

A useful tip for enjoying wine in summer: If you plan on serving your chilled wine outside, consider purchasing a spare bottle, opening it a few hours before guests arrive, and pouring it into a clean plastic ice cube tray.

Place the tray in the freezer, then use the frozen wine cubes to keep your guests’ wines chilled at the perfect temperature throughout the day.
